A new report by a UK insurer reveals that over one third of 18 to 34 years olds have no home contents cover whatsoever.
For the over 55s the news was brighter however, with 91 per cent of respondents saying they had contents insurance.
And overall, only 19 per cent of those polled said they did not have such a policy.
32 per cent of London residents have no home contents cover, comparing starkly with the East of England (84 per cent), Scotland (83 per cent) and Yorkshire and Humberside (82 per cent).
But while plenty of people had home contents insurance, around two thirds had only a vague notion of what items were covered. 38 per cent knew exactly what was covered, with men slightly more likely to know this information (44 per cent) than women (33 per cent).
84 per cent of those in the countryside were likely to be covered, compared to 70 per cent of urban dwellers.
Tips for taking out home contents insurance:
- Read your policy thoroughly so you know what is covered and what isn’t.
- Make sure you have the correct policy for your property. Those leaving their property empty for long periods, for instance, might need to take out unoccupied property insurance.
- Improve security of your home by adding/updating alarms, and window and door locks.
- Consider increasing your excess in order to reduce your premium
