Did you know that the government has now confirmed plans for mandatory electrical safety checks if you’re a landlord in England?
If you own a rental property, when was your last electrical wiring check or PAT test done? Soon, a full electrical inspection will have to be carried out every five years.
The rules will mirror those already operating in Scotland, and have come as a result of tireless campaigning from consumer and safety groups such as Electrical Safety First following the tragic death of 33-year-old Thirza Whitall who was found dead by her five year old daughter in a rented property in Cornwall. This death could have been prevented if the property had simply been earthed correctly*.
The implications of not complying with the legislation could result in a large fine, a prison sentence, or even being liable for the death or injury of one of your tenants.
There are no dates set for the implication of this legislation yet but for updates on this, and any other information about your obligations as a landlord, please contact Kevin Meek or email us at firstname.lastname@example.org
