Landlord insurance clients are often involved in property development and will be interested in a new idea aimed at helping to finance affordable homes. A charge on single house developments has been introduced by Pembrokeshire Coast National Park. If you are building a single dwelling you will have to pay in to a fund that will be passed to housing associations for affordable housing projects. The new levy will be phased in over three years and it could eventually cost £25,000 on a three bedroom house.
The idea behind the levy is that developments of two or more houses already have to have an element of affordable housing and the park believes that it is fair to make developers of single unit sites contribute as well.
The scheme has already run into opposition from people who believe it will be counter-productive because it will deter developers from building new homes.
