Property owners thinking about entering the student accommodation market should take a look at research from the insurance group LV=. They reckon that the tuition fee increases coupled with declining numbers of 18-24 year olds in the general population over the next decade will result in a 14% decline in British higher education student numbers over the next 10 years.
If fewer young people decide to study away from home there could be serious consequences for landlords in university towns. At present, only 21% of UK full time students live at home and study locally. LV= expect this percentage to increase to nearly 50% over the next decade.
