If you are one of our landlord insurance clients you may be interested in the progress of the Government’s plans to reform social housing. One of their arguments is that there are too many council tenants living in houses that are bigger than they need. This is why they are planning to make them contribute to the rent if they have spare bedrooms and offer them house swaps to more suitable homes. They are also aiming to cap housing benefit at £400 per week.
The new rules are contained in the Welfare Reform Bill. The Government says that there are five million people on social housing waiting lists and over a quarter of a million tenants living in overcrowded conditions. It hopes that these proposals will help to ease the problem.
