We have always warned our unoccupied property insurance clients of the need to keep a careful check on their properties and the news about heating oil thefts is another cautionary tale.
Apparently domestic heating oil is regularly being taken from people’s household tanks and with the rise in oil prices this trend may get worse. If the thieves have the right equipment it is a relatively easy crime to commit. In Devon and Cornwall there have been two hundred thefts in the past year. One person has had oil stolen on three occasions. It is obviously a good idea to take as many precautions as you can such as hiding the tank behind fences or wall; especially if there is a locked gate fitted. Some people have resorted to fitting security cameras.
If a house looks unattended it is likely to be regarded as an easy target so make sure it does not stand out as being empty and have it inspected regularly.
