We are all paying extra for our cover because fraudulent claims push up premiums. A new register being promoted by the Association of British Insurers is being tested at the moment with the aim of going live next year. The register will hold details of known fraudsters and will help the insurance industry by making it more difficult for these people to obtain cover.
It is widely believed that some fraudsters carry out multiple frauds by moving from company to company. This new scheme will help insurers to identify these people before they take out a new policy.
The National Fraud Authority says that insurance fraud costs over £2bn per year; a cost that is passed on to law abiding people through higher premiums. Anything that helps to pinpoint the offenders will be welcomed by the rest of us.
