A cross-party group of MP’s have written to government ministers asking for a minimum kitchen and cooking requirement for landlords to provide to their tenants according to the Guardian newspaper and reported on landlordtoday.co.uk.
The recommendation will be part of a progress report from the Feeding Britain anti-poverty group who would like to see at least a two ring hob for cooking and a refrigerator as a minimum requirement. A failure to deliver these essential facilities by landlords should render them ineligible for housing benefit tenants. The group has also asked that failure to provide this basic level of facilities for cooking should result in landlords having their licenses revoked and potentially be banned from letting properties altogether.
In the article the Guardian commented that an interim report showed that there were a number of reasons why low-income tenants were more likely to use food banks. The list included poorly equipped kitchens.
