Colchester Business Awards Finalists 2011
Active and Sustainable Travel Award
Click4quote’s Walking and Cycling Policy – helping to encourage our staff to get out of their cars by paying them to walk or cycle into work whenever possible. Leaving their cars at home also saves money on fuel and parking costs and also helps to reduce the traffic congestion at peak travel times in and around Colchester.
Members of the Colchester 2020 Travel Club, which is designed to help local businesses promote and encourage staff to look at walking, cycling, car share, sustainable business travel and public transport options.
Staff who conduct business out of the office are encouraged, wherever possible, to use public transport rather than their cars. With industry partners located on our doorstep we are able to conduct business meetings quickly and easily and without the need for long car journeys.
Through our efforts we hope to help encourage our staff to be more aware of environmental issues within their own lives so that they are more aware of how they as individuals can make changes, however small and to encourage them to pass on this message to friends and family.
Enviromental Awareness Award
We understand that it is inevitable that our day to day operations will have consequences on the local, regional and global environment. In order to ensure that our impact is as small as possible we are wholly committed to reducing, and where possible eliminating, the adverse environmental effect that our organisation may have on the environment to the best of our abilities.
We have embraced the need for effective environmental measures as an integral part of our company ethos and our main objective is to maximise the environmental efficiency of our office and working practice. For instance by looking at our communication process and a more effective use of electronic methods, looking at switching to energy saving lighting and even introducing house plants to help freshen stale air and remove or absorb toxins. We believe that all our efforts, however small and seemingly insignificant, collectively can make a real difference.
And to ensure we meet our commitments, we undertake to periodically monitor and review our environmental practices to ensure that we are performing effectively and take corrective action where necessary.
On the Piste this Winter?
It’s this time of year when intrepid travellers plan their next venture onto the snow in order to descend the mountain slopes at high speed on two thin strips of fibreglass or a small skateboard minus the wheels - certainly not an activity for the faint-hearted. So if you are planning this type of holiday make sure you don’t miss out on the fun by being prepared before you go.
Check your travel insurance for winter sports cover and that it includes all the activities you are planning on doing. Be aware of any restrictions of cover and make sure that there is an adequate level of medical expenses cover as medical treatment overseas can be expensive. Remember that often the affects of alcohol* can be quicker at higher altitudes and can dull your awareness to the cold, putting your health a risk. You may consider some form of exercise* before you go as being physically fitter can help reduce the risk of injury.
If you are travelling within Europe then it is essential you take a valid European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) with you as this will provide the necessary state-provided medical healthcare at a reduced cost or sometimes even free. It is valid in countries within the European Economic Area and also includes Switzerland. The EHIC does not replace the need for travel insurance as it doesn’t cover all medical costs, repatriation to the UK or private treatment. For more information or to apply visit www.ehic.org.uk
